South Mountain 20 Mile Hike

March 2007

20 Mile Hike - South Mountain

For our Scouts that have been working on the hiking merit badge, the 20 mile hike is the hardest requirement! We picked this early day in March before it gets hot (ha ha!!!) to hike 20 miles in South Mountain Park. Our Scouts are James, Alex, Michael, Blake, Nico, and Karl, and the parents who came along are Dave, Michael, Bill, and Debi.
We hike 10 miles one way on the Desert Classic Trail, where we will have lunch, and then return to our starting point...

Hey, this hike is looking pretty flat!
Our first break after one hour of hiking.
Our second break after another hour of hiking - so far the hardest part of the trail is avoiding all the mountain bikers!
Our fearless hike leader, Nico! He is a hiking machine!

Alex finds the famous South Mountain shoe cairn.
Lunch time, we must be halfway through!!

Who wants some more organic ginger snap cookies?
Ready to start hiking again??
James is the youngest Scout ever in our troop to attempt the 20 mile hike! And he is still smiling halfway through!
Hey, is that John Lennon?

Michael loves these Luna bars
Hey Michael and Alex, long time no see!! All your friends on the bikes say hi!
Our feet hurt, are we almost finished??
We made it! Way to go, Scouts!
We made it too! Are we the oldest Scouts to ever finish the 20 mile hike or does it just feel like that??
Hey, I think James finally got tired!
