Superstition Mountain Hike

March 2008

Today we plan a very easy 10-mile hike on Jacob's Trail at the base of Superstition Mountain.

Our hikers are Dave, James, Terance, John, Heidi, Thomas, Debi, and Flat Stanley
The weather couldn't be more perfect for our hike today and the desert is green and full of wildflowers

John and Flat Stanley are enjoying the hike!

After about four miles, we take a break and everyone says this hike is TOO FLAT! So.. I know this nice little detour we can take for a real adventure..
and we head off to the Flatiron!
Terance and Thomas get bored waiting for us, so we tell them to go ahead and we'll meet them at the top. Maybe they will find the plane crash while they wait for us -- or maybe they will get a nice hour nap :)
Are we really going all the way up there?

James leads us up the trail, watching for white paint arrows on the rocks
Nobody can say this trail is too flat!!
You're kidding, right, this is part of the "trail"???
We're at the top!!
Terance gets a nice nap while they wait for us - and he couldn't have picked a spot with a better view!
You don't see many 11 year olds who can make it to the top of the Flatiron - way to go, James!
And now for the really fun part, going back down to the bottom! Thomas and Terance want to explore and find another way down on the other side of the mountain but we convince them that the trail is probably the best way down.. especially after watching the search and rescue helicopter looking for an injured climber.
Going down isn't too bad after all and James does a good job finding the trail
Well, there is this tricky part where James and Dave practice their crabwalking
We're smiling because we all made it back down safely!

I can't believe I was up there!
We head back to the car - and we hope that Heidi is waiting for us!

Heidi and John and Terance and Thomas and Flat Stanley are waiting at the car when we get back and we all go eat Mexican food to celebrate our big accomplishment!
