Rocking Chair Woodworking Project
January 2006
 | Mark Elzey, owner of Mark Elzey Woodworking, is a well-known woodworker who has been building custom handmade furniture for over 30 years. He has offered to teach our Boy Scouts woodworking skills and guide them through the construction of a handmade rocking chair. First we learn about tool safety and general woodworking principles. |
 | This is what our chair will look like when we finish and before it is oiled and waxed.
 |
Look, it's somebody's birthday tonight!! Mr. K, are you 29 AGAIN???
| |
 | Mark does most of the intricate cutting for the chair while teaching the boys the techniques of find woodworking. Each rocking chair Mark builds takes an average of 100-120 hours of work. Our chair is made of walnut and spalted mubangu woods and inlaid with a turquoise design.
 | |
Scalpel..forehead wipe...what would Dr. Kiefer do without his assistant, Igor McCormick.
 | |
 | The boys spend several Saturdays in Mark's workshop working on the chair.
 |
 | The pizzas are here - lunch break! |
| Hey, where did all the Scouts go?? | |
 | Okay, everybody put on their face masks so we can start sanding!
Let's not let Nathan do any sanding!
 |
Everyone works together to sand the chair. | | After sanding, each chair has seven coats of hand-rubbed oil and three coats of beeswax. The chair is polished after each coat. |
All done!
 | |
 | Nick keeping himself and the chair warm. |
Our finished chair - Thank you to Mark Elzey for the time and labor donation and to Woodworker's Source for the donation of the wood! And thanks to the Chandler Knights of Columbus who will be raffling it off for us!
