Peppersauce Cave

January 2005

After checking our gear and learning the rules for safe caving from Rich and Glenn from the Central Arizona Grotto caving club, we're ready to begin our adventure -
Rich, Glen, Kelly, Tammy, Ian, Brian, Lyle, Richard, Nick, Lyle, Augie, John, Michael, Greg, Cody, and EJ.

Once we are all in the cave, Rich gives us a history of the cave and instructions on its layout, and then lets us explore. We bring trash bags and start collecting all sorts of interesting things to fill them up -- ask Richard why he smells like beer when we leave the cave a few hours later!
Don't look now, Augie, but I think that's the giant hairy five-eyed Peppersauce tarantula following us! Don't worry, he only eats Boy Scouts under the age of 14...

Yikes! You never know what is going to crawl out from under the rocks in these caves!

August and Nick find some cool cave formations.
Lyle and Nick enjoy a break with their dads.
Hey, check out these hand shadows! I can make a bunny rabbit!
We all climb down to see the lake, and Rich teaches us about animals that live inside caves and the importance of caves in the water cycle.

Ian and John take lakeside naps and enjoy the quiet of the cave.
Augie and Ian climb up the ladder after our visit to the lake.

And then through the rabbit hole....

Okay, everybody -- turn your headlamps off and let's take a group picture!
(you'll have to use your special mouse flashlight to see us!)

Back in the sunlight!

And here's our 'after' picture - everybody made it out safely - covered in dirt but with big smiles on their faces! Thanks to Rich and the Central Arizona Grotto for guiding us through the cave and helping us turn from 'spelunkers' into 'cavers'!! Now let's go eat some pizza!
