Chiracahua National Monument Campout
Our last campout of the year was at Chiracahua National Monument in southern Arizona and definitely one of our favorite outings! We camped in their group camp site and on Saturday hiked a 10-mile loop through the park, including the famous Heart of Rocks Trail.
Mr. Frantz reads about how the rock formations here were formed from volcanic ash and rhyolite.
 | Mr. McCormick gets his hiking clothes on and packs up for our day hike. |
Mr. Weite shows us the trail we'll be hiking, a 10-mile totally flat hike from the top of the mountain down to our campsite...
...and everyone loads up for the drive to the trailhead. |
It is so windy up at the top, it is hard to stand up straight!
I don't think this is what I meant when I said line up for a group picture! |
And we're off down the trail..
 | |

 | | Mr. Weite finds a cool little side canyon to explore
| Hey look, Nico and Blaze are back on the trail after their (accidental?) detour! |
Mushroom rock, which reminds me, is it lunch time yet?
 | Halfway through we stop for a lunch break - Mr. Frantz has a good healthy high-energy lunch! Are those organic Doritos?
Hey Rich, can you give me a hand holding up this rock??
 | Don't shrug, Rich! |
 | Yes, it really was that windy up there!
We finally get to the good part of the trail :) the famous Heart of Rock Loop
Too bad the Scouts aren't having any fun on this hike!
 | |
 | Um, who knocked over the rock???
 | Mjolnir!
Guess what this one is called?
 | |

Punch and Judy |
| A room with a view |
No, we're not tired, we're just waiting for the slowpokes who are taking all those pictures of rocks!
 | Okay, only a few more miles to go until we're back at camp! All flat, of course..

Only a few more miles!
Didn't she say that a few miles ago???
We made it! Now it's just a short little hike back to our camp site...

 | Time for dinner.. and don't forget the cobbler!

| After a delicious dinner of steaks and pasta and grilled asparagus, we enjoy each other's company and feed the bats. | |
 | The Scouts still have plenty of energy left and play cards until late at night
 | In the morning, after a few minor gate repairs, we pack up and head home.
| Hey, do you need a hand with that gate repair?? | |
 | Thanks to Mr. Weite for organizing such a wonderful trip!! |
| And thanks to our chief photographer, Ryan! | |
