Chevelon Canyon Backpack Trip

October 2007

Back Row: Ryan, Tom, Dave, Michael, Rod, Debi

Front Row: Ian, Nico, Connor, Tyler, Brandon, Kevin, Alex, Coby, JD
Before we start hiking, Mr. Pendleton and Mr. Kiefer go over some map skills, teaching us how to read topographical maps. All those lines close together on either side of the creek mean this is a REALLY flat hike.

It is a beautiful fall day

This part of the trail seems pretty flat.. just don't look down, Alex!
We seem to be heading downhill pretty quickly.
What did you find there, JD?

a Tarantula!!

That was easy enough! We don't have to go back up that tomorrow, do we?
Rest time is over, time to go find a camp site!

We work our down through rocks and bushes and water
Rod and Ryan never miss an opportunity for a nap. Don't tell Ryan that's poison ivy he's relaxing in!

The view from where Ryan and Rod are looks pretty good!

We set up camp - whoever set up this tent, you know who you are!!
That tent belongs to one of these three dads, can you guess which one?
Now it's time to play in the water, hit things with sticks, and climb on rocks!

Mr. Pendleton meets with all the Life Scouts to talk about.. life?
Back at camp, there's some serious crawdad cooking going on..

and some serious crawdad eating!
Some scenery pics --

Looks like dinner time and Brandon is having --- a pan of hot water
How to bake a cake in the wilderness:

Mix batter

Place in oven to bake
Wash your baking utensils

Frost and decorate cake

Serve with cold milk! (**Thanks to Nico!!)

And now for a friendly fire starting competition between the scouts and the dads..

Once we get our fire going, we still have a few minutes before bedtime for some skits!!
Bump in the night?
In the morning we wake up to a balmy 28 degrees with 100 mile an hour winds (you think I'm exaggerating? Ask Connor, who was the only scout to bring gloves!)
Hurry and take the picture, I'm freezing!
We're almost to the top!
Last break before we get to the top

Our reward - Alfonzo's Mexican food in Payson!
Thank you to the trip leader, Mr. Kiefer!
