CW Crews - Boundary Waters Adventure

June 2008
June 12

CW1 takes off first and heads up to Gun Lake. Today we will paddle 8 miles with 7 portages - a hard first day but we can sleep late the next day, we're staying two nights at Gun Lake.

Ryan and Connor paddle through the rice paddies
Our first portages are rocky, slippery, and steep -- I thought they were supposed to all be flat??
The least flat portage of the whole trip

Lunch break, I think the mosquitos are getting to Nico

Ryan models the latest fashion in mosquito repellant accessories. Pretty soon we are all wearing citronella bracelets wherever we can hook them - wrists, ears, glasses, pockets.

The rain stops and we decide it is time to start some fishing!

Tim: Hey, Tom, do you think Deb will ever quit taking pictures and start paddling?

Tom catches the first fish of the day.
Nico and Kevin

Richard and Mark do some fishing
Nico takes after his brother the double bagger.
Blue skies!
Everyone is worn out after our first day
Richard is channeling Mark Perkins on the food organization job.

Hey Mark, just tell me what to write down!
First night - steaks and baked potatoes
After the steaks, we are all still hungry and Tim cooks up some burgers for everyone
Tom helps Mark get the tents up before the rain starts
Special dessert for our first night in the Boundary Waters!

Tim makes coffee with his French press
During the storm last night, one of the Scout canoes escaped and tried to make a run for Canada, but Ryan, Spencer, and Jeff chase it down and bring it back to camp.

We are spending 2 nights at Gun Lake, so it is a rest and fishing day for everyone.

Ian pumps water for us
Spence and Jeff make breakfast
Richard gives some fishing tips to Brandon and Jeff
Check out this big fishing tackle box Jeff's dad bought him!
Mark goes after the big ones just offshore

Roasted apples for lunch

Connor gets some special big toe treatment
Spencer sacrifices a bass
..and the heart is still beating
Tonight's dinner is ham steaks, mashed potatoes, and corn
and fish!
The Fish Whisperer is born

June 14
Today we leave Gun Lake and we'll paddle 9 miles with 4 portages over to Thursday Bay and hopefully meet up with the CCW crews at the Thursday Bay Hilton!
CW1 takes off first and finds out that today will be our best fishing day of the trip. The pike and bass are biting in Papoose Creek!
Only 4 portages today but the first one is a killer, 300 rods

And the CW2 crew takes off

Through mud and rocks and mosquitos and poison ivy, nothing can stop the packs from getting through!
Let the fishing begin!

Tim sure made that look easy!!
Let's go check on CW1.. it looks like the fishing is great!
Mark shows off another big pike
The Deadly Duo have teamed up! For the rest of our trip, Kevin and Conner will be the ones to beat in the fish count contest.
Don't bother helping us, Deb, we can do this, just go take more pictures
Surprise, Kevin caught another one!
Meanwhile, back to the CW1 crew... does anybody know where we are? We sure don't!
Look, a bald eagle, we must still be in the United States, right? But why is the map screen on our GPS blank, eh??

Tim: Hey, Tom, do you think Deb will ever stop looking at the maps and start paddling?

Give me a break guys, you don't want to end up lost in CANADA, do you??

Another pike, Tim?!
Give me back my favorite lure!!

Nico and Ryan enjoying the scenery
Hey, what do you know, it's CW1! We all meet up in Crooked Lake and get an escort over to the Hilton by some of the CCW Scouts

Our welcoming committee
Ian catches a whopper of a pike!

I hope I don't get bit by this tonight!
